Why Punta Gorda, Florida?

Why Punta Gorda, Florida?

House & Latitude Design and the Art of Hospitality

A personal note on place, pace, possibility—and choosing the less obvious answer.

“Punta Gorda may not be the obvious answer. Perhaps that is precisely why we chose it.”

Friends and family ask us all the time: Why Punta Gorda? The answer is both simple and difficult to explain. We were not looking for another version of somewhere we had already lived. We wanted a place that felt different — smaller, warmer, closer to the water, and still a little under the radar. Somewhere life could feel less scheduled and more intentional. Punta Gorda had that almost immediately.

There is an ease to life here. Mornings feel quieter. Water is part of the landscape rather than something you have to plan a trip to see. Boats, palms, old Florida streets and long stretches of sunshine create a rhythm removed from the pace of larger coastal destinations. What ultimately drew us in, though, was not simply the weather or the water. It was the potential.

Punta Gorda feels established without feeling finished. There are beautiful older homes, waterfront neighborhoods, historic architecture and properties waiting for a thoughtful next chapter. For someone who loves renovation and design, that creates an entirely different relationship with a place. You are not simply choosing where to live — you are imagining what something could become. That is exactly what we saw in our own home.

The goal has never been to create a stereotypical Florida house. We want something more collected and architectural: relaxed enough for coastal living, but layered with natural materials, restrained color, modern lighting, art and pieces that could just as easily live somewhere far from the water. In many ways, Punta Gorda represents what I love most about design itself — the possibility of finding something with character and making it deeply personal.

And then there is the lifestyle. Dinner near the harbor. An afternoon on the water. Doors open to warm air in the middle of winter. Friends visiting from colder places and remembering, almost immediately, how good it feels to slow down.

For us, Punta Gorda offered the rare combination of water, warmth, character, possibility and a quieter way of living — with enough room left to create something entirely our own.
